Letters
a-z, numbers0-9, hyphens. One period, for the extension. Avoid spaces, underscores, and symbols like* : < > ? | # % &. -
Lowercase
report.docxandReport.docxcan appear as duplicates when synced. Lowercase keeps names consistent across systems and URLs. -
Dates and versions
Dates as
YYYY-MM-DDat the start. Versions asv01,v02at the end. Both sort naturally. NeverFINAL. -
Path length
Stay under 260 characters for the full path. Long folder names nested deeply push you over the limit faster than you expect.
