Name Checker

File & Folder Name Checker

Paste a filename, folder name, or full path. The tool checks it against the rules that matter for Windows, OneDrive, SharePoint, macOS, and other platforms, and suggests a safer version when needed.

A name that works on your computer can still fail when it is synced, shared, or moved elsewhere.

Rules at a glance

Four principles cover most of what the checker catches

The full best-practices guide explains the rest, including folder structure, path length, and platform notes.

  • Safe characters
    Letters a-z, numbers 0-9, hyphens. One period, for the extension. Avoid spaces, underscores, and symbols like * : < > ? | # % &.
  • Lowercase
report.docx and Report.docx can appear as duplicates when synced. Lowercase keeps names consistent across systems and URLs.
  • Dates and versions
Dates as YYYY-MM-DD at the start. Versions as v01, v02 at the end. Both sort naturally. Never FINAL.
  • Path length
Stay under 260 characters for the full path. Long folder names nested deeply push you over the limit faster than you expect.
